Dragon Scale Stone from North Dakota ,  A number of these stones, with their scale-like patterns, were formed alongside Dinosaur fossils from the Cretaceous Period in North Dakota.  Despite the fact that they formed alongside fossils, they are not fossils themselves, they are concretions.
 
Their dark red-brown coloring is caused by manganese/iron (limonite) oxides and iron oxide with a siderite core.
