Stardust Obsidian is a fascinating variety of volcanic glass. It was discovered in Jalisco, Mexico in 2023. Like all obsidian, it forms from silica-rich lava that cools so quickly that crystals can’t grow, creating an amorphous, a solid natural gas instead of a true mineral. Its deep glass base is primarily silicone dioxide. The same element is found in quartz but frozen in a non-crystalline form. What makes this material special is the fine white inclusions scattered throughout it. These are composed of cristobalite, a high-temperature form of silica that developed in small pockets where the lava cooled more slowly. Each tiny inclusion marks a moment where molten rock began to crystallize within the glass. Together they create a pattern of stars suspended in the night sky. Stardust obsidian is not only visually striking but also a geological snapshot of the cooling process of ancient volcanic activity. Its celestial beauty and rarity have quickly made it a favorite among collectors and lapidary artists around the world.
